completed deck after repair

An awning is a type of covering that is attached to their exterior of a building, like your home. They can be made out of many different types and sizes of material like canvas, acrylic, cotton, polyester, yarn or even vinyl. The fabric is stretched over a frame that can also be made out of several different types of materials. The flexibility of materials used to create awnings is part of the fun of designing and installing them in your unique outdoor living space. An awning can be a wonderful addition to a custom deck or patio to really create the ambience that you desire for your outdoor living space.

There are many types of awnings available. Typically, though, they will come in one of two main models. Either they will come in a manual model or an electrical model. Each of these types comes with its own set of pros and cons. Motorized awnings do not have vertical supports and instead rely on retractable arms to create an unobstructed area of shade. The motor is typically hidden within the roller bar of the awning. A manual awning will require that they be unrolled and hung by hand which can be a difficult process. They often have more stable arms, so it really comes down to what you desire for your landscape.

Wind Tolerance

Awnings now come with a rating for their ability to tolerate wind. This rating is based on the width and length of the awning, as well as the number of supporting arms and the material from which it is made. Some modern awnings come equipped with wind sensors which will send a signal to the motor of the awning if the wind has picked up. The awning, sensing the wind, will then retract automatically. This can save you a lot of trouble and money in the long run, although it will come with an investment upfront.

Aluminum awnings are a popular choice due to their lightweight build and color availability. Aluminum awnings can help maintain cool temperature inside and outside your home as well as comfortable shade for your patio space. Awnings of this type also have a very long-life span and can last as long as 40 years if they are well maintained. Aluminum awnings can even be designed to fold down and protect windows from inclement weather.

Retractable awnings have grown in popularity over the years and come in a few different types. Retractable patio cover systems are waterproof and can withstand very powerful winds. Retractable lateral arm awnings are a modern version of a crank awning that can be operated by a remote control. Retractable side or drop arm awnings, pop up canopies and retractable solar shade screens are a few other types of retractable awnings that are available.
